Squirrels and Autumn hand carved stamp elements by Andrea Lauren

Creating some more Autumn themed design elements for my pattern library and new fabric collection. These Squirrels and extra bits were carved from rubber blocks and printed by hand for this art print which I shared on my Instagram feed.  I rarely share the process of scanning the stamps into the computer, but it always involves re-inking and printing the blocks in solid black on very thin paper from which I can get a consistent look and texture.  Cleaning up the elements can be time consuming if I have been in a hurry to carve the blocks, but I try to keep the handcarved look in the finished design.  Here they are pictured below.

Creating a Repeating Block Print Pattern by Andrea Lauren

Exploring traditional printmaking and pattern design methods is a strong passion of mine.  Particularly inspired by the great work of William Morris, I wanted to step away from the computer and design a repeat pattern which was hand-carved and could be hand-printed.
In its planning, the design would work as a one-color pattern as well as having the ability to be expanded and digitally customizable with more complex color ways.

1.  I apply india ink to the block to give a contrast when I'm carving.  I use carbon paper to transfer my design to the block.
2.  The block is inked (I use water-based block printing ink).  I registered it by hand, taking care to align the overlapping parts of the design.
3.  A close-up of my carved block.

Andrea Lauren - Honey and Hive Fabric and Pattern Design Collection

A few weeks ago I carved some bees and beehive block print stamps after watching Vanishing of the Bees on Netflix.   After playing around with some gold ink I took to the computer to create a collection of prints that I've just released in my Spoonflower shop.

I always enjoy creating summer patterns.  This year I made a collection of "Sweet Treats" illustrations of ice creams and doughnuts for my Spoonflower shop.  These prints and additional colorways can be seen here.

Congregation of Gators by Andrea Lauren

I've been setting aside a bit of time each week to keep my hand carving lino skill in practice.  Working with the soft linoleum is fairly quick and allows me to play around with repeats and different layouts.  This gator came from my pattern library and I'm considered creating some one color screen prints in the style of the stack of gators.

Black & White Pattern Collection by Andrea Lauren

Lately, I've been adding some new patterns to my Black & White collection along some more kiddo designs and some classic simple designs to make my own clothes from.  The Sun, Moon, Stars are a bit nostalgic for me inspired by a little bit of the 90s revival and in particular this perfume my mum had.
