Bird Silkscreen Prints Series Part 2 by Andrea Lauren

This post follows part one in the Bird Silkscreen Prints series.   Here's a look at the Crane, Peacock, and Toucans.  Each of these prints has five colors and were screen printed by me in my studio; they are all in an edition of 25.

Block Printing Stamps by Andrea Lauren

If you follow me on instagram, you've been seeing me carving and printing a lot of stamps.  I typically work in a series of 4-8 designs which can all fit together.  I love how the block printing inks give great texture on the paper when I expand these into repeat patterns and/or silkscreen prints.

Andrea Lauren: Two and Three Color Block Print Stamps: Safari

I have been dreaming up a new collection of pattern prints and have decided to hand-carve all of the elements from blocks.  I chose to do a Cheetah, Lion, Zebra and Tiger for the Safari Collection.  It has been a lot of fun to create these all by hand and get away from the computer and practice my carving skills all at the same time.

The third cat print of this series.  I really enjoyed sketching this one out and adding in some floral elements which I do not often include in my work.  I'm really pleased with how this particular print balanced the two colors.  It is my favorite of the lot so far.

Andrea Lauren: Reductive Silkscreen Print: Cheetah

Wrapping up this series of reductive silkscreen prints with this print of the Cheetah with his five colors separated.  You can see the whole series in the second photo below.  I enjoyed the challenge of creating the prints in a coordinating fashion and found that the process of drawing directly on the screen created some nuances that couldn't be achieved with a photo-emulsion method.  I hope to use this process more in the future.

Andrea Lauren: Two-Color Reduction Linocut: Cat on the Roof

Here's the second reduction linocut print in my cat series.  I'm thinking this is a vacation perspective.  Step-by-step: 1)  Sketch and idea for color separation.  2) Carving away the areas that will remain the paper color.  3) A look at the first color printed and the block for the second color ready to go through the press.  4&5)  Pulling the prints and letting them dry.

Andrea Lauren: Reductive SilkScreen Print: Rhino

The third in this series of six reduction screen prints.  This first photo shows the very last color before printing.  It is basically just an outline at this stage and everything in the screen has been filled in with the stop-out medium.   You can see the first four colors in the second photo and the ink really builds up on the paper.

Andrea Lauren: Five Color Reductive Lino Print: Animals in the Rain

Animals in the Rain.  This illustration has been around for a long time in many different styles.  For this one, I wanted to try out a reduction linocut with more than two colors to experiment with how well I could register prints and how good the colors would look overlaying.  I ended up running each print through the press five times and was fairly pleased with the process and outcome!  I don't know how many of these five color complicated prints I will do but at least I know it is an option for the future.

 

Andrea Lauren: Two-Color Linocut Print: Cat in the Chair

Excited to share this new series of reduction linocuts all inspired by the cat's life as I imagine it.  Reduction lino prints are all hand-carved from a single block for each color.   After printing the first color, the block is carved away and printed a second time with another layer.

I've been experimenting with reduction silkscreen prints this past month.  The technique is very artistic and free; there seem to be a lot of possibilities since everything is done by hand and able to be adjusted and changed during the making of a print.  I chose some safari animals as my test.  Each of these have five colors which are unified through the series.

Andrea Lauren Linocut - Snappy Samba

Another one color linocut I've completed this year in my Musical Tales series.  This one is titled Snappy Samba and features two gators jammin' on piano and bass.
