Printing on Textiles by Andrea Lauren

In thinking about opening an online shop featuring my printmaking I knew I wanted to contribute to the long tradition of block printing textiles.  Here's a look at some of my experiments on a variety of fabric types.  I'm currently narrowing down a line of pillows, clutches, and tea towels for my new shop.

 

Block Printing Stamps by Andrea Lauren

Here is the second set of hand-carved blocks which I have been working on the last couple of weeks.  It is always fun to experiment with rainbow roll ink gradients, ghost printing, and repeating the design element in different arrangements.  Since I use these designs in the digital medium, I typically print these at least two times; once in fun color version and once in solid black for scanning.  Follow me on instagram for these process shots as they are completed.

This post follows part one in the Bird Silkscreen Prints series.   Here's a look at the Crane, Peacock, and Toucans.  Each of these prints has five colors and were screen printed by me in my studio; they are all in an edition of 25.

Bird Silkscreen Prints Series Part 1 by Andrea Lauren

The bird block stamps I've recently completed have formed the basis of a series of silkscreen prints.  I've used a variety of elements to tie the series together in 4-6 color prints.  Here's a look at the Flamingo, Pelican and Swan prints.

 

Andrea Lauren: Safari Silkscreen Print: Tigers

After carving the safari animal blocks, I thought there could be more opportunities to feature the designs in prints.  Screen printing this design was the best option and I chose black paper made by French Paper Co.  This tiger is printed in three colors.  

 

Andrea Lauren Linocut - Snappy Samba

Another one color linocut I've completed this year in my Musical Tales series.  This one is titled Snappy Samba and features two gators jammin' on piano and bass.

Andrea Lauren Printmaking Cat-tet Linocut

Another linocut in my series of 'Musical Tales'.  This quartet inspired by a vintage photograph of a very dapper string quartet.  If anyone out there is familiar with playing in a music group, there are many interpersonal as well as musical dramas to enjoy in chamber music or garage bands.  The string quartet is one of my favorite ensembles as it offers the best of unity of tonal quality and unique individuality in the same musical package.  Anyway, it was fun to carve and imagine this cat-tet's arguments and successes as a string quartet.

Andrea Lauren Printmaking - Musicians of Bremen

I'm continuing my music themed linocuts and settled on the Musicians of Bremen.  Although the animals in the Grimm tale don't actually play beautiful music, I chose to illustrate this quartet playing recorder, cello, lute, and drum.
