Sketches

After laboring over a few tricky web domain name adjustments, re-directs, and other website things which I am unqualified to discuss, I am stopping by to share some more sketches!  There is something great about a pen drawing and the potential it holds.  I have some cyanotype solution eager to be applied to some lovely paper for this foxy character on the right, but I am considering adding a border element before taking any firm steps with making prints.  These beautiful end of summer days are seeming perfect for some outdoor printing.  The little birds and additional elements on the left are destined for some new fabric patterns.  Thanks for reading!

Into my sketchbook part one.

I am looking forward to starting a new series featuring some glimpses into my sketchbook and works in progress.  In an attempt to be more organized and attached to my creative process, this record keeping of sorts, in one place, is something I haven't always maintained during projects or random inspirations.  I have been busy developing and refining a new set of fabric patterns of which these are a few of the close to finalized sketches.   I've been particularly inspired by some of these photographs of the beautiful northern landscapes.

Foresters

This past week I've been preparing for a second gallery show.  This group show will start Friday at the Macy Gallery here in Manhattan;  I'm very excited to have 15 pieces in the show.  The first piece is a monoprint titled "The Foresters".  Mixed media, 11 x 14 on paper.  Gouache, acrylic, vintage paper.

Foxes in drypoint - Original Prints

This set of two prints (there may be more coming in the series) uses drypoint and monoprint coloring techniques.  The prints, of which there are 5 in the edition, are each 11 x 14.

Alpenhorn Fox - Original Mixed Media by Andrea Lauren

For an upcoming group show I have created a new set of original pieces: two collagraphs, a set of four large mixed media pieces, and a pair of drypoint pieces with goauche.  The next few posts will show the four mixed media works.  I have used a Charles Brand press to manipulate a variety of printmaking techniques and develop pieces in sizes larger than I traditionally work.  The Alpenhorn Fox is 12 x 18 on paper--water-based inks, goauche, and vintage paper ephemera.

  

The Hare - Collagraph Print by Andrea Lauren

"The Hare" collagraph print was created at the same time as "Two Foxes."  The process for preparing the plate, a 9 x 12 size, involved a wealth of materials: cardboard for the deep embossed focus areas, glues and gesso medium for building up a secondary layer, and some textural paints with a variety of embedded materials for an additional effect on the ground portion of the print.  Paint was applied with an old toothbrush for the tricky nooks, stipple brushes, brayers, and paint brushes.  As with many collagraph prints, a variety of relief and intaglio applications and removals of ink results in the final print.  This short edition of four prints also features some hand-coloring with gouache to bring out the main elements.  This will be showing at the group show in a couple weeks as we as a few available in my shop in the upcoming days.

This year I've been very fortunate to have access to a printmaking studio here on the UWS.  I've been spending most days in the studio experimenting with different forms of printmaking: Etching, Collagraph, Relief Printing, Aquatint, and Stone Lithography.  One of my favorite types has been collagraphs.  This 9 x 12 piece combines a collagraph plate with gouache hand-painting in a small edition of four pieces.  This will be one of 12 new works for a group show in Brooklyn next month.
